Your sense of taste can have a surprisingly big impact on how much you enjoy your favorite foods. While dentures can restore your ability to chew and smile confidently after tooth loss, some people notice that food does not taste quite the same after getting dentures. Fortunately, there are several reasons this can happen, and there may be ways to improve your experience.

Why Can Dentures Affect Taste?

Much of what you perceive as flavor actually comes from your sense of smell, but your tongue plays an important role, too. Your taste buds detect basic tastes such as sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami. Dentures do not cover the taste buds on your tongue, but certain types of dentures can affect how flavors reach other parts of your mouth.

Traditional upper dentures typically cover part of the roof of your mouth, or palate. This area contains sensory receptors that contribute to how you experience food. Having a layer of acrylic between the food and the palate can make some flavors and sensations seem less noticeable.

Your mouth may also need time to adjust to having a new appliance. A new set of dentures can initially feel bulky or unfamiliar, and changes in saliva production or oral sensation may temporarily affect how you experience food.

Getting Used to Your Dentures

If you have recently received dentures, give yourself some time to adjust. Start with foods that are soft and easy to chew, then gradually introduce foods with different textures and flavors as you become more comfortable.

You may also find that strongly flavored foods are more satisfying while you are adjusting. Using herbs, spices, and other flavorful ingredients can help make meals more enjoyable without simply adding more salt or sugar.

Good denture care matters, too. Food particles and plaque can accumulate on dentures and contribute to unpleasant tastes or odors. Clean your dentures as directed and maintain good oral hygiene to help keep your mouth feeling fresh.

Could Implant Dentures Help?

For some people, implant dentures may provide an alternative to traditional removable dentures. Implant-supported dentures are secured to dental implants rather than relying entirely on suction or adhesives to stay in place.

One potential advantage is that implant dentures may not need to cover as much of the palate as a traditional upper denture. Depending on your individual treatment plan, this can leave more of the roof of your mouth uncovered and may allow you to experience food more naturally.

Implant dentures can also provide greater stability while eating. Because the dentures are anchored in place, they are less likely to shift or move when you bite and chew. This can make meals more comfortable and help you focus on enjoying your food rather than thinking about your dentures.

Talk to Your Dentist About Changes in Taste

A change in taste after getting dentures is not necessarily permanent, and there are several possible reasons your food may seem different. If your dentures feel uncomfortable, cover a significant portion of your palate, or seem to interfere with your enjoyment of meals, talk with your dentist about your options.

Depending on your oral health, preferences, and goals, adjusting your current dentures or exploring implant-supported dentures may help improve your overall experience.

After all, restoring your smile should also help you enjoy the little things that make life worth savoring.
